A Day In The Life Of A Retired Musician
A Day In The Life Of A Retired Musician
First I should state that I sleep odd hours, and very inconsistently. I usually try to start my day at 4am, just enough time to grab an Atkins shake and a pop-tart. I watch the so-called "news" for just a few minutes while I eat at my TV table in the living room. Wife is asleep but gets up soon. I head to "The Shed" for 4:20 rituals using my walker to get to the back door, and then my Fisher Price Kawasaki 750 Raptor "Upgraded" 18v Quad to get around the pool to my smokin' shed, which is more like a 48 square-foot nightclub, actually. I give the Alexa command, the shed starts up, all the lights come on, the FireTV heads to the home page while turning on the surround sound. Right on time! It' snow 4:18, time to pack a bowl. I use a "TOPPUFF" if you've ever seen one. I partake in this morning ritual for a bit then head back inside using the same method of transportation in reverse.
Now, it's time to head for "Lauberland"...my home studio. It's been open to the public since 2003, but these days I'm picky who comes in because I'm retired (no longer perform live, just work in the studio part-time). I do a few online surveys to wake up. I hit my goal of $5/day usually within an hour, sometimes longer. It pays for my weed and wakes me up. After this I check my messages (email, voicemail) and look at my "stats" on multiple platforms like google.
By this time, 10am rolls around, and I head to the living room for a PC break and take my meds. 9 of them. I don't try to take them all at once anymore after "the episode". After this I begin to plan my day, which depends on the weather. If it's chilly, I'm too stiff to do physical crap so I work on etsy and my websites. If it's warm or hot I can do inside or outdoor or shed work. There's always something to do, trust me when I say! So at this point I've been doing whatever for hours until I get hungry. I head back to my TV table in the living room for (usually) 2 bologna and cheese sammiches on white sammich bread, mayo and chopped onions, courtesy of the most wonderful woman on Earth, miss Kelly, my Creole girl. Sometimes I mix it up with pizza and many other things. After this, it's nappy-time. I find it's a lot more fun to lay like a blob in the bed with a full belly (bad visual, I know, right?).
I wake up from my nap, so that means it's time to head back to the shed (as depicted above, so I won't repeat). This time I'm gonna smoke and talk to Alexa, whom on my devices I call "Computer". We discuss what sports are best to watch tonight, stock market news, the weather, all the normal things. Sometimes she helps me with creation and design while I hit the bong some more. Now I'm awake enough to do any shopping or financial aerobics that need to be done. After this I can either play my guitar in the shed for a bit, or head into the studio where I work on music for a while.
It's now around dinner time or later. Wife is headed for bed. Shed gets up early. Really early. I spend more time on the PC looking at stats, fixing websites, uploading or creating listings for my Etsy shop, and general studio work depending on who is going in or what I'm working on the next day. I might work on songwriting at this time, or editing a song or audio project, video project, graphics, logos, etc... you get the idea. Soon I'll rest again if the sports come on later, but I can hang for 7pm starts! Let's remember I'm 62 and my spine condition/meds rips away all my energy doing mundane tasks like even going to the kitchen and back to I have to manage my energy levels throughout day and night my resting, not necessarily sleeping. If i do sleep, it's (now) usually about 4 hours 1-3 times/day when I used to sleep consistently 6hrs/day.
Well, that got boring real fast, but anyway I am watching sports at this point, mostly in the shed where I can crank up the su
rround sound and smoke at the same time. I try to make it to the end of the good games...normally NBA, NFL, WNBA or college football. I might even sleep on the shed bench for a few hours. I usually find myself rolling back to the house (yes on the Kawasaki 18v) at wee hours of the morning...12am - 2am, where I sleep all the way in to 4am and begin this tremendously repetitive but fun, entertaining, self-sustaining, no-complaining, bizarre and non-constraining lifestyle of mine. I hope you enjoyed spending this condensed day with me. I'll see you later. It's almost nap time!
